On September 7th the crowd gathered for Berlin’s very own Olympiapark and Olympiastadion for the first day of this year’s edition of Lollapalooza Berlin. On the premises, the festival had plenty more to offer than just the concerts. To mention just a few: a section called Fashionpalooza which included for example getting handpoked tattoos, or a painting workshop.
All of the performances that day were truly on another level, the first act I saw that day that performed at one of the main stages it was The Beaches. The best part of the show for me was, when right before they played their to-be soon-released song called „Jocelyn”, they revealed that the song was written about their fan, also referring to one of the fans in the crowd sign saying „Who’s Jocelyn?”
Next, on the main stage south, after The Beaches show, Tom Grennan came out. From the very second he stepped onto the stage, you could notice the genuine fun he had from performing. Other than the incredible vocals and his on-stage presence, what I really remember about his set was the part before and while Tom was singing his new song called Higher, which is set to come out on the 20th of September, when he encouraged the crowd to help him sing the chorus to the said song, which was incredible to hear.
What also amazed me was the fact that the most dedicated fans came first thing in the morning and waited the whole day on the stage just to see their favourite artist up close. The artist I had in mind that day was Louis Tomlinson. Even though the artist covered two of the One Direction songs called „Drag Me Down” and „Where Do Broken Hearts Go", what really left me speechless is that the whole crowd knew the words to all of his songs and not just the biggest singles which doesn’t really often happen at festivals.
Right after Louis’s set, it was time for OneRepublics’s set which is safe to say was definitely one of the most anticipated performances of the festival. As the band said, they decided to play only one of their new songs and the rest of the show was just, as they themselves called it, a karaoke with them. Among others, they performed songs „I Ain’t Worried”, „I Lived” and „Counting Stars”.
The Perry’s stage, also known as the DJ stage, located inside of the Olympiastadion was closing that day with Martin Garrix. The visuals, pyro and fire effects as well as the fireworks were truly outstanding which I don’t think I’ll ever forget. But what I also loved about his performance was the variety of songs he played, starting with the very high-energy songs but also sailing through songs like Summertime Sadness.
