On June 23, 2024, The Icelandic rockers of KALEO brought their “Payback Tour” to The Masonic in San Francisco. While San Francisco’s cable cars clamored just outside, The Masonic Auditorium was an elegant setting for the night’s performances.

Opening the show was Neal Francis accompanied by his band. The Chicago-based musician took center stage at his piano as the house lights dimmed to set the mood. The band, clad in retro attire, performed with style and grace.  Stand-out songs include "Changes Part 1&2", "She’s a Winner", and "Can’t Stop the Rain". Each song is a testament to Francis’s ability to blend influences from the past into his music. A standout moment was during an extended jam session portion of a song when Francis leapt to his feet while playing and began utilizing a whammy bar attached to his 1970s Hohner Clavinet to bend the pitch of his music. Based on the crowd applause Neal Francis left the stage with many more fans, myself included.

You could feel the anticipation in the crowd as it came closer for KALEO to take the stage. Their last headline tour stopping in San Francisco was in 2022 leaving fans eagerly awaiting their return. The stage lights slowly began to glow and the band members took their places one-by-one, leaving the center microphone position empty. The band began playing country western-influenced music as Jökull Júlíusson (JJ)  took his position center stage. JJ sporting his signature hat began playing an acoustic guitar bearing a painting of "The Lonely Cowboy". JJ’s gritty, soulful vocals immediately captivated the audience.

Guitarist Rubin Pollock, bassist Daniel Kristjansson, and drummer David Antonsson also shone throughout the night, their musicianship evident in every riff, beat, and bass line. Pollock's guitar solos were particularly electrifying. Thorleifur Davidsson, a harmonica and pedal steel player, is an exceptional musician and entertainer. His harmonica solo in “Broken Bones” was captivating and blended technical prowess with a palpable sense of emotion.

Throughout the night the band showcased their ability to seamlessly merge rock's rebellious spirit with the emotional depth of the blues. They played tracks from their acclaimed albums A/B and Surface Sounds as well as recently released tracks from their upcoming album. Each song was met with enthusiastic applause and cheers.

As the night drew to a close, KALEO returned for an encore, ending the night with two final songs including their new track "Rock N Roller". The intensity of the song was a fitting conclusion to a night marked by exceptional musicianship and heartfelt performances. The band left the stage to thunderous applause, leaving no doubt that they had delivered a memorable and impactful night.
