Joywave Brought The Energy To Downtown Atlanta

Joywave by Hannah Pena

A quiet Tuesday night at the Masquerade, in Atlanta, was interrupted by the indie rock band, Joywave. Consisting of Daniel (vocals, guitar), Joseph (guitar), and Paul (drums), the Rochester, New York band sang songs from their new album Permanent Pleasure. Fans were excited to hear the live version of their new project. The night was filled with strobing lights, synchronized clapping, and a sculpture of a big sleeping cat.

California band, HUNNY, kicked off the night with their unforgettable set. Getting into the spooky season, they started off with “Halloween.” Lead singer, Jason, was rocking a red Syracuse sweater, and his vocals were through the roof. Hunny fans in the front row could not stop smiling and cheering. They released their third album, New Planet Heaven, last year and played “action —> reaction,” and “kick ur teeth in.” Traveling back in time, they played “July,” a song about thinking back to his past life. Their high energy set brought a smile to people’s faces. Finishing off their set list with “Vowels (And The Importance of Being Me),” red lights shined on the band and they shredded their guitars and drums.

Half an hour later, the lights dimmed in the 550-capacity venue. The lead singer, Daniel, walked on stage, and “Graffiti Planet” started. Fans erupted in cheers and could not stop smiling, the whole night. The band was all styled in short-sleeved dark blue silk pajamas. Daniel’s high energy was the highlight of the night. He was running back and forth around the stage, and the crowd was loving every second of it. Blue lights then took over for “Obsession,” from their 2020 album Possession. Playing one of their biggest hits early, the beginning of “Tongues” began, and the crowd went wild.

The band then went on to play more tracks from the new album, “How To Be A Bother,” and “787 Dreamliner.” Joywave’s production was unlike any other. A small statue of the cat sleeping on their album cover joined the band on a pedestal, and it was spinning along slowly. Also, a “Permanent Pleasure” neon sign hung in the middle of the stage. We were transported through every era with Joywave. From 2022 with “After Coffee,” to 2015 with “Dangerous,” and 2017 with “It’s A Trip!,” fans sang their hearts out for every single song.

A memorable encore consisted of not one, but two live performances of “Destruction.” For the encore, they walked back on stage, and Daniel told the crowd that the keyboardist was a great harmonica player. He played a few notes and then went straight into “Destruction.” Fans went absolutely nuts and the floor was shaking like never before. Joywave put on such an amazing show. Their setup goes to show that even on a small stage, you can make a big impact.
