Gary Clark Jr at Saratoga Mountain Winery

Gary Clark Jr. By Connor Dixon

On August 18th, 2024 four-time Grammy award winner Gary Clark Jr brought his "Hyperwave" Tour to The Saratoga Mountain Winery. The evening kicked off with an opening performance by Suzanne Santo. Santo, also known for her work in the band Honeyhoney, performed a short but sweet set highlighting her solo work. Santo was accompanied by Izzi Ray who switched between playing guitar and bass throughout the set. Santo's setlist was a well-curated mix of tracks, switching from Violin to guitar effortlessly. Santo's voice, rich with emotion and a slight rasp, filled the amphitheater. Catchy blue riffs could be heard in her song Bad Beast which perfectly warmed the crowd up for the rest of the night with Gary Clark Jr.

The sun set, stars emerged, and a full moon lit the amphitheater. Gary Clark Jr with a full band took the stage and the opening riff to "Maktub" could be heard. A fitting first song as it's the first track on Gary Clark Jr's latest album JPEG Raw. JPEG Raw is an evolution of his typical blues-rock sound and includes jazz, R&B, and hip-hop influences.

The setlist included multiple tracks from JPEG Raw as well as deeper cuts and hits from previous albums. "When My Train Pulls In" showcased Clark’s mastery of the guitar, with extended solos making his guitar scream and wail. Gary Clark Jr didn't steal the spotlight all for himself. He left space in his playing that pulled attention to his band and his sister's harmonizing vocals behind him. The rhythm section was tight, driving the music forward with precision and groove, while the keyboardist added layers of texture that enriched the overall sound. Together, they created a sonic landscape that was both expansive and intimate, allowing Clark to shine as both a guitarist and a storyteller.

In a world where live music can sometimes feel overly polished, Gary Clark Jr.'s performance at the Mountain Winery was a reminder of the raw power of blues and rock. His ability to channel emotion through his guitar, coupled with the intimate setting of the Mountain Winery, made for a concert experience that was beautiful. It was a night where music, nature, and emotion converged, leaving a lasting impression on those in attendance.
