On September 15, 2023, Ovtlier (pronounced Outlier) released their new song and video called "Dead Man Running."
Ovtlier, formed in 2014, is Joey Arena (lead singer), Mike Wilkinson (drums), Kane Buckley (lead guitar) and Nolan Hayes (bass). Taking influence from 90's grunge, their songs feature distorted guitars, catchy lyrics, and driving drums; "Dead Man Running" is no exception. This song for when someone keeps running their mouth and you are just over it.
The song's intro begins with "You're a dead man running" followed by the distorted guitar and aggressive drums that's the driving force behind the powerful vocals. The talking tracks that take place throughout the verses highlight that angry, fed-up feeling, and contrast well with the lyrics. Verse two underscores this dichotomy perfectly with the singing part of "Damn it's such a shame // That you can't shut your mouth" followed by the talking track of "Now I'm gonna have to knock you out."
One of my favorite parts of the song is the bridge where it says: "What goes around comes around // Heavy is the head that hits the ground // What goes around comes around // Fuck around and find out // Heavy is the head that hits the ground." It then goes into a ramped-up guitar and drum sound with a distorted, reverberating "Oh yeah" vocal. It gets your heart racing before one last chorus followed by an epic outro of Joey screaming "shut the f*ck up."
The music video accompanied the release of the song that visualizes it perfectly with its dim, atmospheric lighting and moving camera angles. Be forewarned: there are some gruesome scenes throughout that are not for the faint of heart! These scenes remind me of A Clockwork Orange with the white shirt, black suspenders, and the brutal torture. Personally, I think the video is amazing and brings the song to life.
If you've ever been in a position where you are so over someone talking sh*t about you and they just won't shut up, this song and video was made for you! Check it out on your favorite streaming platform and check out the video to visualize what you can't actually do IRL, because if we're honest with ourselves, we've all been there!
