Bears in Trees release what may be their best work so far in their latest single "Cassiopeia" on August 31st. The band out of South London is made up of the "four rapscallions" Callum Litchfield, Iain Gillespie, Nick Peters, and George Berry to create their "dirtbag boyband" that defies genre labels. The band has shared in the past that they pull inspiration from bands like The Wombats, Fall Out Boy, and The Front Bottoms. They have shared with their fans that they are referring to this era as their "ok, now a silly one" era, their "cringe compilation" era, their "self awareness is no longer a curse" era. For the first time in a very long time, they are releasing their own music entirely independently. Their new single "Cassiopeia" is named after the constellation in the northern sky charted by the Greek astronomer Ptolemy and made up of five bright stars to form a "W" or what is referred to as "the seated queen." The constellation's name comes from the vain queen and wife of Cepheus in Greek mythology, who boasted about her unrivaled beauty. In the myth, Cepheus and Cassiopeia were placed next to each other among the stars, which Bears in Trees seems to allude to in their song. On Instagram, the "four certified up to no-gooders" share that they "have found great success in meticulously documenting every neurotic thought." The song, as the lyrics state, is "so beautifully, so brutally out of comprehension," and will bring its listeners to tears as you lay in bed longing for the person that "will give you their palm to help you walk through the hurtful" and "give you the calm that you have so long searched for." In a recent post, Bears in Trees says, "In all honesty, when I look at the night sky, I can work out two, maybe three things, but I feel warm when I do. I see the same stars people have been projecting their stories onto for centuries. I see the swirl of the universe where we make our insignificance mean something. Life can be a lot of work. Whether you’re writing your dissertation on comparing ancient greek societal structures to their mythological system or waking up in the morning, it can be exhausting and it can feel pointless. But when you have someone with you, the beauty of it all can shine through. It doesn’t necessarily become easier, but it feels brighter. We can find home in people, and they can find their home in us. We can see each other, fully, in our complexity, and see it as beautiful in the mess of it all, like looking at the stars, the infinite expanse, and casting your story onto the universe." The band also shares online, "I think the kids who wrote "Just Five More Minutes" were as honest as the dirtbag boyband that wrote "Cassiopeia." It always felt "good" to release music. It was always the most integral thing to us at that moment in time. Otherwise, we would never have done it." We highly recommend you take a deep dive into Greek mythology and play "Cassiopeia" in the background, and maybe even take a deep dive into Bears in Trees' discography while you're at it.
